HERBERT ROTHGARBER was born in Brooklyn in 1930 and began composing at age 8.  He attended New York University and Hunter College of the City of New York, where his teachers included Wallingford Riegger, Bernard Wagenaar, and Michael Fiveisky. He also attended the Orff Institute in Salzburg.

Rothgarber taught for 28 years in the Oceanside, Long Island public schools and for 12 years in private schools. He has served as co-founder, vice president, and president of the Long Island chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and member of this organization's national board, as consultant to the NY State Bureau of Music Education, and was the founding director of the LI Chimes, an interdisciplinary children's performing arts ensemble. He has presented workshops throughout the East Coast, and is presently on the faculty of Nassau Community College.

During his long tenure as a school music teacher, he composed and performed with his students two operas for young voices (one performed at the 1964 World's Fair), five operettas using Orff instrumentation, and numerous works for voices and for recorders. He has been an active member of the Long Island Composers Alliance since its inception and has served as its Treasurer as well as Concert Manager and Coordinator for its annual Music For Students programs.
