ROBERT N. ROTH
began his organ study in Pittsburgh, and received his AB from Franklin
& Marshall College, where he was chapel organist. He studied with
Frank McConnell at St. James Church.
While working towards his MA in
English at the University of Virignia, Roth served as organist of
Charlottesville's First Methodist Church. After two years as a chaplain's
assistant in the U.S. Army, he entered Union Seminary's School of Sacred
Music in New York, where he received a Master of Sacred Music "magna
cum laude." His teachers include Vernon deTar, Searle Wright, Elaine
Brown, and Margaret Hillis.
Roth has held numerous positions as
organist and choirmaster, composing many works including "Missa Sancti
Jacobi Minoris," which won a prize in 1976 from the Diocese of New
York, and author of numerous articles written for such publications as The
Living Church, Journal of Church Music, The Diapason, The American
Organist, and Opera News. He is the author of "Wond'rous Machine: A
Literary Anthology Celebrating the Organ" (Scarecrow Press) and music
editor of "Chatter with the Angels: An Illustrated Songbook for
Children" (GIA).
