BRIAN ISRAEL was born in New
York City in 1951 and received advanced degrees from Cornell
University. His teachers included Karel Husa, Ulysses Kay, Burrill
Phillips, Robert Palmer, and Lawrence Widdoes. Dr. Israel taught music
composition, theory, and history at Syracuse University until his
untimely death from leukemia at age 35. During his short career,
Israel earned many prizes and commissions for his compositions.
The Syracuse-based Society for New
Music has established the Brian
M. Israel Prize for young composers, in his memory.
